Our Presence

Azim Premji Foundation is currently present in ten districts of Karnataka, namely, Kalaburagi, Mandya, Yadgir, Bengaluru, Bagalkot, Ballari, Bidar, Koppal, Raichur, and Vijayapura. The Foundation has set up district institutes in these districts and have also started 51 Teacher Learning Centres at the block level across the above districts.

The Foundation began its work in Karnataka 2001 and has been engaged in a multitude of programmes covering education leadership and management, teacher education, and community involvement. Some of the key initiatives have been Computer Aided Learning Programme, Learning Guarantee Programme, Education Leadership Development Program, Child Friendly Schools initiative (CFSI), Namma Shale, and Institutional Capacity Development Project (ICD), Mandya. Currently, the Field Institutes are focused on building the professional capacities of key stakeholders in the education system i.e., teachers, head teachers and functionaries through multiple modes of engagement such as workshops, voluntary teacher forums, exposure visits, seminars, teacher learning centres, etc.

About the State

With a population of over 6.11 crore (Census 2011), Karnataka is the ninth largest state by population, comprising 30 districts. Out of total population of Karnataka, 38.57% people live in urban regions. Urbanization increased from 22% in 1951 to 38% in 2011.

Since the 1980s, Karnataka has emerged as the pan-Indian leader in the field of information technology, earning the state capital, Bangalore, the sobriquet Silicon Valley of India. Karnataka also leads the nation in biotechnology and is home to India's largest bio-cluster. The state also accounts for 75% of India's floriculture.

As per Census 2011, the state’s literacy rate at 75.36% is above the national average of 74.04%. Male literacy rate is 82.47% and female literacy rate is 68.08% indicating a wide gender disparity.

The state human development index in 2017 was 0.675 which is higher than the national average of 0.639 as per Global Data Lab and ranked 19 among the states and UTs.
